The Black Pearl Oyster mushrooms or Black Pearl King is an oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus variety) hybrid from Japan. It is a cross between a European and an Asian Pleurotus ostreatus. It’s growth appears similar to that of Pleurotus eryngii (King Trumpet Oyster) in the beginning and as it matures, it can resemble a common Pleurotus (oyster) mushroom species. Black Pearl Kings produce beautiful and great-yielding fruits using either a top fruiting or side fruiting method in bags. Black Pearl Kings grow very well indoors and are considered less finicky than Pleurotus eryngii. As it matures, the cap will flatten out, although it is ideal to harvest while the cap is still slightly curled downward. The cap and stem of a Black Pearl King are great for cooking, with a similar texture and meaty flavor throughout. The caps are great for stuffed mushroom dishes but as a whole, Black Pearl King mushrooms are very versatile and can be used in soups, chili, pasta, etc.
